Banners at MUC – Centenary Banner 1988
This blog aims to provide information on the various banners, sewn by many congregation members over a number of years.
The first banner depicted was made in preparation to celebrate our Centenary in 1988.
The script for the banner was chosen as: Come as living stones and let yourselves be used in building the spiritual temple (1 Peter 2:5), and our congregation families were asked to embroider a letter in any style they chose, with the material being provided. This led to a variety of styles which adds to the richness of the banner. Each family also embroidered their name somewhere on their square.
Fourteen blocks surround this bible verse, with two showing the Church in the original design (top left) and the updated Church style after an extension was made (bottom right). The other twelve blocks represent each of the active groups at that time: Choir, Sunday School, Fellowship Group, Agape Meal Group, Pastoral Care, KUCA Club for kids, Haddassah Group, Playgroup, Eldership, Cornerstone Group, Youth Group and the Prayer Circle. Each group took on the challenge of designing and completing their block.
Of course it took many months for all of this to be coordinated and put together, and it was indeed a celebration when this was hung in the Church on the Centenary in celebration of all that had gone before, and all that was to come for Montrose Uniting Church.
